In this grand finale to the summer series, the organ of Stockholm Cathedral is heard at its most heroic and expressive. Johann Sebastian Bach’s imposing Fantasia and Fugue in G minor BWV 542 opens the programme with dramatic contrasts and virtuosic brilliance, followed by the contemplative richness of the chorale partita O Gott, du frommer Gott BWV 767, where each variation unfolds new colours and characters.
César Franck’s Pièce héroïque continues the journey with late-Romantic intensity and noble energy, showcasing the organ as a symphonic instrument in its own right. The intimate miniature Nun ruhen alle Wälder by Jacques van Oortmerssen offers a moment of lyrical stillness, before the concert culminates in Joseph Jongen’s powerful Sonata Eroïca, a dazzling Belgian masterpiece that unites architectural grandeur, shimmering harmonies and a truly triumphant conclusion.
